Makes 5 dozen.

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup shortening
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup granulated white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups quick-cooking oatmeal
2 cups crisp rice cereal
1 cup shredded coconut

Start your oven at 350°. Sift flour, soda, and salt together. Cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla and the flour mixture, then add cereals and coconut, using hands to mix if necessary. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheet. Bake 12-15 minutes.
